Spain offers flower
festival with religious twist
For a whole day
full of free events and traditional Spain, Sitges offers Corpus Christi Floral
Art.
The annual festival
takes place on June 6 and celebrates the Sunday following Corpus Chrisi - the
miracle by which the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ during
the Eucharist.
The Catalonian
town celebrates with detailed floral carpets known as alfombras de flores, which
adorn its streets and consist of carnation petals, grass and rice.
A key part of the
celebrations is the main plaza where crowds gather before an altar where a huge
collection of carnation petals is released over everyone.
For more floral
delights, visitors can visit the National Carnation Exhibition in the gardens
of L'Hort de Can Falc, which features blooms from across Europe.
