The
main Islands of Aigina, Poros, Spetses, Salamania and Ydra make up the Saronic
Islands.
The Islands located south of Athens provide a welcome retreat for the locals
living in Athens as these Islands are easily reached by a short thirty-minute
journey from the Bustling Capital.
The Saronic Islands have much to offer the independent traveller, with the Islands
being situated so close to one and other makes it perfect for a day of Island
hoping.
The Islands attract
fantastically hot weather in the summer months of June to September, but they
also provide a relaxing and pleasant climate in the winter months, however the
sea’s can be rough and very cold.
Many visitors to the Islands are looking for a beach holiday and there are plenty
to choose from, however if you are looking for a quite retreat in the summer
months, think again, these Islands provide the locals of Greece with a getaway
from City life and holiday makers arrive in their droves to the beaches, finding
a spot on the beach will see you up with the dawn.
The islands contrasting
lifestyles are cosmopolitan, lively and with a Greek traditional ambiance, however
with attractions to suit every one.
Places of interest are plentiful with many archaeological museums, monuments,
clean beaches to laze around on, little fishing villages to explore, and monasteries
in their natural glory, and Greek restaurants to dine in.
The islands also
offer beautiful scenery with pine forest and olive trees set within lush mountainous
regions, making it perfect for picnics and walking through the peaceful and
secluded settings inhaling clear air and admiring the fantastic views of the
Islands.
Walking within the Saronic Islands is a popular activity especially for the
Wildlife enthusiasts as the Islands offer many species of unusual birds which
are resident in the Mediterranean and some that are migratory birds flying from
East Africa to Europe. In the mountain regions you may catch a glimpse at a
Kestrel, griffon Vulture and Eagle.
Reptiles can also be found such as the Balkan green Lizard and Geckoes feasting
on mosquitoes at night.
Butterflies on the Island are all around with beautiful varying colours.
Passenger ferries
and tourist boats can do travelling to the Saronic Islands to all the Saronic
Ports departing from Piraeus central harbour on a daily basis making it perfect
for day trips.
Flying to the Islands is another option with flights available departing from
Athens with Olympic Airways to the various Islands.
Hydrofoils (although more expensive) are the fastest way to travel around the
Islands, however services may be limited during the winter months due to rough
waters.
