Have waves of
fun at Italian boat race
Join the huge crowds
to cheer on a host of international competitors at one of Venice's biggest events.
The Vogalonga in
St Mark's Basin takes place on May 30 and is a boat race that first began in
1975.
A number of different
traditional types of boat are reconstructed by people for the event that includes
a long 18-mile course.
Over 50 Venetian
rowing clubs take part and people from all across the world can be seen on the
course that leads across the Lagoon to the island of Burano and back, winding
through Cannaregio and the Grand Canal on the home stretch.
Previous participants
have included Chinese crew in a dragon boat, Oxford and Cambridge rowers and
a local man who swam the whole course.
