Crete Holidays
Crete
is an Island of beauty with superb views of the Island from the mountainous
regions and rolling hills where wild basil grows, giving the island a fantastic
aroma. The coastline of Crete offers some fantastic beaches and calm blue waters
for a relaxing holiday, however Crete is extremely popular with holiday makers
and the beaches can become very full during the busy summer months of June –
September, the weather plays a big part in this as temperatures can reach up
to 29 C. The underdeveloped coastal regions located on the South of the Island
can provide a quieter retreat.
Crete is Greece’s largest Island with popular resorts of Heraklion, Hania,
Aigos, Nikolaos Rethimnon and Lassithi located on the North Coast. The capital
city of Crete is Iraklion that is located in the centre of the North side of
the Island. Iraklion has much to offer the traveller such as fantastic beaches
with blues seas, calm waters and a variety of water sports, as well as the usual
bars and restaurants, wide choice of hotels, shops, museums including the Archaeological
Museum, Venetian harbour and churches to explore.
The extremely tourist developed region of Hania located on the western side
of the Island is one of the more popular areas to visit. It is steeped in history
and this is evident as there are many Turkish and Venetian buildings scattered
around, there is also a harbour, Archaeological museums, public gardens, markets
to pick up a local bargain, shops, restaurants serving traditional and International
Dishes.
Samaria Gorge is also major attraction, where you are able to trek through the
beautiful southwest coast where you will pass many wildflowers and wildlife
that is plentiful. The Gorge is open in the months of May – September
and tickets are available for the excursion from most towns in Crete.
Getting to Crete is fairly simple, there are many tour operators that offer
package deals and for the independent traveller there are a couple of options
such as flying directly to Athens Airport which accommodates both European and
International Flights, then travelling by either boat or flight again onto your
destination in Crete, however for less hassle there are many direct flights
available from the majority of European Airports that are served by Charter
companies as the summer season tends to be extremely busy. Transport to and
from the Airport to your hotel can include taxis, buses and coaches that are
provided by tour operators, often a holiday representative will meet you at
the airport and for a small fee when booking your package holiday will pick
you up and drop you off to your hotel.
