Enjoy total Meyhem
at Brussels festival
Probably the last
country to raise a maypole this year, Brussels holds its Meyboom Celebration
this August, with a host of costume giants accompanying the pole.
Taking place on
August 4, the event is free of charge and sees the giants take the pole on its
route from the area's Place des Sablons to the Grand Place.
The festival celebrates
the anniversary of a wedding that originally took place in 1213 and was ambushed
by a gang of youths.
Now one of the
biggest events on Brussels' heritage calendar, locals honour the patron saint,
Saint Laurence who saved the couple and their marriage.
The procession
starts at 2pm and a bonfire takes place at 8.30pm.
