Within mainland Greece there are many holiday resorts and which you go to will depend in part on what you want from your holiday. Here are details of some of the more popular resorts to give you an idea of what’s available.
The capital of Greece Athens received a makeover prior to the 2004 Olympic games which were held here. Street markets, souvenir stalls, traditional vine covered tavernas, and ancient monuments all sit side by side with modern buildings and museums. Traffic in this Acropolis can be a bit of a nightmare, so the best way to see this area is on foot.
Sited in the north east of Greece Halkidiki has many beautiful sand and shingle beaches that run down the length of the Kassandra peninsular bordering on the Aegean. There are a number of pretty villages in the area, and numerous tavernas and bars as well as several night clubs. An area with much to suit all tastes it has ancient ruins and lovely sea walks, fantastic restaurants, great sporting facilities and lively night life.
Situated on a peninsula to the south of mainland Greece, this is the birthplace of the Olympics in Olympia, an area where you will find centuries of history and mythology combined, and where there is much of historical interest to see.
Set on the west coast Parga is probably the most attractive resort on the mainland. It has a picturesque harbour which is surrounded by village houses set in narrow flag stoned streets and the whole thing nestles in a small bay between olive groves and the sea. A great base for those who want to enjoy boat trips to Paxos, and also to the surrounding villages of Aghia, Trkastro and Anthoussa which are perched up on a plateaux in the mountains above. There are also two beaches either side of the harbour which boast wonderful golden sand as well as a variety of tavernas in the area.
Just north of Parga, Sivota is beautifully unspoilt. It is surrounded by pine, cypress and olive trees which form a forest in this area. The harbour is the focal point of the village, and various small shops selling local produce and crafts are to be found here. A truly traditional setting for a holiday.
